As a skeptic at heart, I have to say that I need proof with my pudding…not IN the pudding. If it’s in the pudding, I will never, ever, ever find it. I need the proof neatly labeled, like the ingredients in the pudding mix before ever making or partaking of said pudding.
It’s just how I am.
Now you may very well ask…how the hell does a skeptic become a hard polytheist who runs around speaking to miscellaneous spirits, expecting them to listen to her? It does seem to be a bit hypocritical. After all, how does one prove that you’re actually hearing whichever spirit you think you’re communicating with?
Difficult, but not impossible. This is where my pendulum comes in.
First, I had already learned a very rational, plausibly scientific rationalization about why pendulums work. It has just enough science in it for me to believe it’s possible that they actually work this way. It goes something like this:
Your muscles make all sorts of twitches and spasms you’re not even aware of. Constantly. By holding a pendulum, your subconscious mind can communicate through those muscle twitches, bypassing that old bear of a conscious, logical mind that normally throws out anything even slightly interesting.
With me so far?
By bypassing the logical part of the personality, it is then possible to communicate directly with…well, whoever you choose. Your Higher Self, your Intuition, your Younger Self, your Gods/Goddesses, your Ancestors, your Muertos, your Orishas, your Lwa…
Whoever.
Because they can communicate directly through your subconscious. They will, and they do. Thing is, in those of us with fairly strong conscious minds that love the logical side of life, the subconscious fairly regularly gets beaten into submission. And those messages then get lost, ignored, harassed, teased, twisted, and forgotten. Then we sit on our hands and wonder why our gods/spirits don’t love us.
They do. No, really. They do. Just sometimes we’re not so good at listening. When the subconscious comes into play…well, let’s face facts. In this culture, we are not encouraged to listen to it. We’re encouraged to ignore it, analyze it, and reject it. If we do listen to it, this culture has us so hornswaggled that we will twist and bend it, scrutinize it, doubt it, and eventually end up doing absolutely nothing about it because we simply can not believe it.
Enter the pendulum. Now I have a tool that allows me to bypass my logical mind. With it I can go directly to my subconscious mind, to that part of myself that still receives the messages and…I can receive those messages without having to scrutinize or debunk them because I know they are real and true.
Hot damn. Sign me up.
So what exactly is a pendulum? Here’s the best part. Yes, you can buy a pendulum online. They come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes…and price points. They’re brass and wood ones that are sold as energetically “neutral.” There are pendulums made from glass. There are pendulums made from various gemstones. There are pendulums made from metals with compartments to stash secret writings, incantations, herbs, gems, or what-have-you. As fancy as you want it, is as fancy as you can get it. The sky is, quite literally, the limit.
Does it really matter?
Well, yes and no.
Essentially, a pendulum is anything at all, tied to a string. Anything. Those old single earrings you’ve got lying around? Tie a cord to one. Voila, pendulum. Wrap waxed cord around a rock from outside. It’s a pendulum. Tie a ring to a string, it’s a pendulum. In a pinch I’ve even used a necklace with a charm on it.
Fancy is not necessary.
There are some people who will say they can only work with this or that kind of pendulum. It’s possible, I suppose. I will never argue with someone who believes that. However, that’s what I find it to be. A belief. I have never had a problem. Everything I’ve ever attempted to use as a pendulum, every pendulum I’ve ever picked up, every pendulum I’ve ever made or borrowed, has worked for me in exactly the same way each and every time. Some will swing larger than others…but having made quite a few now I can honestly say that’s a matter of the length of the chain/cord/whatever and the weight of the pendulum that causes that.
I will also say however that of all the materials used for pendulums, the one that seems to have the most number of complaints are those made from gemstones. Some people’s vibrations apparently just do not seem to jive with certain stones. Theoretically possible. It’s also possible that if it is something you did not make yourself, that you purchased or something someone else made for you or even a pendulum you borrowed from another person…your energies may contrast with energies picked up from it. You might find it works just fine after a good cleansing. It could happen, anyway…
If you’d like to make a pendulum for yourself & you’re handy with beads, it’s simple enough to do. Grab a head pin, pile some beads/stones on it, attach to a chain. Voila! Pendulum. I find they look nicer if they’re pointy at the bottom so I have a tendency to put a bead cap at the top, pointy end down. It does give the pendulum a nice professional look to it.
Simple enough, right?
Okay…to prevent going on tooooooo long in one post, I’ll get into the details of actually using a pendulum in the next post…and then after that some of the warnings about talking to spirits with a pendulum…and eventually in all of that, other methods of using a pendulum. They are incredibly useful little devices.
I feel the same way about the subconscious in tarot. While I believe that maybe on some level it is guided by a higher hand (or rather in specific readings), i often believe you will get the interpretation based on already knowing the answer in your mind, the cards are just giving you a symbolic outlet to express that–a key to the reservoir of knowledge in your subconscious.
It does happen sometimes. And tarot is the other divination tool I rely on…again, you can certainly get past the logical side of the mind as it appeals so much to the abstract mind with all the symbolism.
I love using the pendulum particularly when I need a *straight* answer tho. Tarot’s not always too hip about that!
Please do! I love this stuff.
Awesome. I like knowing what I’m writing is actually interesting to someone other than myself!
I think I may be entirely too logical and skeptical to even use a pendulum. Tarot for me is sketchy, and so are runes. I know that Divination has roots in so many ancient religions, but I am just not convinced that there is any room in 21st century society for divination. Even trying to dive back into it myself has been plagued with issues. I can’t go into them, yet, but when I address these issues before October begins, I’ll cover that.
I need straight answers pretty much 100% of the time. Tarot isn’t good for that. But, then again, I don’t think anything short of someone coming to me and giving me the straight answer from their own mouths is good enough.
I studied myself right out of Christianity, out of Wicca, and maybe out of paganism altogether when I think about it.
You are the most skeptical person I know. But I say that with love. Because I understand. Skeptics realllllllllly, reallllllllllly want and need to believe. But they can’t just believe because it’s cool or hip or someone tells them. Skeptics need proof. Once a skeptic does believe…well…it’s different. Totally.
Don’t take the pendulum at face value. Test it, try it. Prove it for yourself…or disprove it. Personally, for me, it passed the test…freakily so. But I had to start using it, trying it, testing it before I actually did begin to believe it. And it wasn’t easy. It was actually a pretty long trail…I know, doesn’t sound like it from this post. But I picked up a pendulum first back when I was taking the chakra class…but didn’t start actually believing it until I worked with it more regularly…about five-seven years from trial to full believe, I would guess.
What can I say. I was a *lot* more skeptical upon-a-time…
I’ve been this way since the cradle. I find things like this fascinating and always have, but I can never quite believe in them. I’m still testing things out. A lot of things.
Really looking forward to your other posts on this
Thank you!
More encouragement to keep working on this one…
Looking immensely forward to hear more about the practical use of the pendulum. There. Enough pressure? You’re welcome.:-) Seriousely, I love it how you always happen to
Thanks!
cover all the topics here I always wanted to see discussed
YAY! Thanks, Ava!
Love the pressure, actually. When people ask me questions & demand to know more…well, at least I know you’re INTERESTED…which makes me feel loved.
I do have that Leo Moon…so I like attention once in a while…;-)
Glad I’m in tune to ya, sweetie. No easy task considering how far away you are!
I was just talking to some friends on facebook about this last night when I opened my email today and saw this YaY I so agree with you! My favorite pendulums are the ones I make out of any old thing. The one I miss the most and could cry to think about it if I thought to long about it was the one my father gave me when I was 8 years old to teach me. It was an old fishing lure, the oval teardrop kind(sorry don’t know what there called) tied to a piece of fishing line. It gave me the best answers. I could tell who was having a boy or a girl baby or twins before ultra-sounds lol gotta love the 70′s. Got one friend so excited last night he ran out to his tackle box and I bet if I jump on FB he has made a few. I don’t know the store bought ones are pretty and all but nothing beats home made. and like my dad would say “no one would question why he, an avid fisher, would carry a fishing lure, but a big fancy pendulum would raise more than a few eyebrows’
Never said before love your blog cant wait to read the next one keep up the Real talk and the Great Vibes Blessings to you,
Christina
*Blush*
Thank you!
As a child of the 70s…I AGREE.
And your dad is one brilliant fella. No one would think twice about a lure. The best tools are most often what we have close to hand…not what we spend far too much money on…and then can’t even use often because we’re too embarrassed to be seen with it!!!
Keep on keepin’ on Christina!

Really interesting. I may pick up a pendulum again…
